Rosie And The Big Stitch

Last week a post on instagram caught my eye. During July, the British Heart Foundation are running a competition called the Big Stitch. Basically, the idea is to find something in one of their stores, buy it (obviously) and then customise it and make it something new.

I’ve never really upcycled, but I love the idea of repurposing something old into something new and lovely. As a family we are trying very hard to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible, so this fits in very nicely. I’m hopeful that this challenge will spur me on to upcycle other old clothes in the future.

When I was in town the other day, I took the opportunity to have a mooch in the BHF Oxford store. Rummaging in charity shops is always exciting – you never know what treasures you might find. There were a few things that caught my eye, but I kept being drawn back to this duvet set.

I mean, what is not to like?!

The next challenge is to decide what to make with it. I have a single duvet cover and a pillow case, which gives me quite a lot of fabric to play with. I keep looking at it on the washing line, waiting for inspiration to strike. At the moment I am thinking dress, but I’m open to suggestions.

I plan to sew it up into whatever it decides it needs to be next week. I’ll be posting updates on instagram, and will be back here with my finished item (hopefully) before the end of the month. Let me know if you’re taking part in the Big Stitch too and we can cheer each other on!
